on “The Undoing of America”
Admittedly I'm a little callous to the cries about the disturbing state of America from liberal/progressive Americans. Not that I don't agree with them, it's just that it makes me feel rather pessimistic and defeated about the state of the world, and I'd rather not feel that way. I don't feel any of the options we have for dissent are worthy of the dissent I feel, nor are they successful in effecting change. I guess I identify with the Ghandi quote that's appears in some iPod adds, "We must be the change we wish to see in the world."
The realization I've come to is that in reality, or in my reality, none of it really effects my life very strongly. I may have to take an alternate route one day to avoid the latest guilt-absolving protest, and I may not have the option to get married, but other than that, I am aware of very little in my life in that is effected by what goes on in Washington DC, Iraq, or the TimeWarner/ClearChannel/Bechtel/GE newsroom. So it's my ongoing policy to not read the news, to keep myself purposely uniformed of what Bush Jr. or "whatever":http://archive.salon.com/news/feature/2003/04/18/patriot_act/index_np.html "secret":http://www.arnoldexposed.com/ "society":http://www.conspiracyarchive.com/ you want to say is controlling this is doing. I'm callous, naive, uniformed, content and happy. My world is a much better place without the news. I'm thinking of starting a movement like "Adbusters'":http://adbusters.org/metas/politico/antipreneur/ black dot campaign where I enlist a bunch of angry punk-rockers to put blackout labels over all the newspaper vending machines.
That said, I found the "interview with Gore Vidal":http://citypages.com/databank/26/1268/article13085.asp from Margaret's del.icio.us links a good read and wanted to point it out in case you missed it. Drew is quite informed and intelligent and although one can hardly speak of the current state of America without sounding alarmist, Drew does it with a matter-of-fact-ness that I admire.
Here's a few excepts:

If you wait for them all it starts to go really fast. That's fun.
